Decent food and great staff in a good location

Although a little hard to find the restaurant is actually in a very central part of Edinburgh and for anyone coming into the city via bus, train or tram from the airport it'll be no more than than 5 minutes from where you are dropped off.

My partner and I had a bit of a mixed view on our food and drink. We went for lunch and ordered the fish burger, bacon sandwich, a smoothie, a coffee and a bit of cake. Overall the sandwich, cake and coffee were very good. The fish burger and smoothie didn't quite do it for us. The fries were really good though.

Staff were wonderful and we'll certainly be going back again to try some other things on the menu.

Only other downside is that it is quite expensive. Including tip we spent over £30 on lunch which was a bit pricey.

Pros: Location (once you find it!), staff, some great di

Cons: Expensive, some not so great dishes

Best vegan burgers and cake around :)

Incredibly impressed with this place!! The staff were lovely, the burgers were by far some of the best vegan burgers I've ever tasted (I've had a fair few), and the red velvet cake I ordered was to die for. I'm sure one of the best vegan places to visit in scotland.

Pros: burgers!!!, Best vegan cakes, lovely staff

Cons: not open for evening hours?

Please, please, please, take hold, Holy Cow!

First of all, Edinburgh, hats off! There are numerous amazing places for vegans here, and now there is a new awesome kid in town: Holy Cow!
This presumably Polish-run eatery is a hidden gem close to the central bus station, that can easily be overseen.
Delicious burgers, stunning sandwich creations, decent soups, great cakes, I'm absolutely amazed by this venue!
I was there twice: First time I tried the burger of the day (comes with chips) and a cake and the second day I ate a soup of the day (pea & mint), a crispy sandwich (Monster Munch) and a cake, everything outstandig (cakes almost outstandig, to be fair). Their hot chocholate is to be highlighted as well.
Lovely staff, impeccable service, just a bit expensive though.
Would visit anytime again! Love it! Highly recommended!

Pros: generous portions, outstandig food, lovely atmosphere

Cons: a bit expensive, not so easy to find

but the mayo... ?

Small, cozy place with great burgers! We had the the Bloody Burger (lentils and beets) and the Mexican Burger. Both were great - the absolutely best part about the meal though was the mayo they put on the burgers. I don't know how they make it but do yourself a favor and order extra to dip your chips in!!

An amazing vegan experience!

My partner and I had some trouble finding this cafe - there is some old signage labelling it "Halo Coffee Bar" or something like that. It is just off the corner of York and Elder St, if you hit the bus station and bus station lane you have gone too far! Look for the Halo sign - I spotted the HappyCow sticker which gave it away. The cafe is lovely and cosy and the staff were really friendly. We ordered the soup of the day - French onion - and it was topped with a lovely cheese, served with bread and vegan margarine. The server was kind enough to offer to split one serving between two bowls as my partner and I wanted to share it. My partner had the Cheddar BLT as his main which was really nice with tempeh bacon. My partner asked for no tomato and they kindly offered to substitute that with peppers which was great. I ordered the fish burger which came with a delicious tartare sauce and freshly cut potato wedges. It was so filling! We shared a slice of the peanut butter chocolate cake which came with a side of chocolate sauce - it was divine, very rich and lovely! Would like to come back again.

Pros: All vegan, Delicious mains and desserts, Great service

Simple and Exquisite!

Absolutely delicious! Spicy lentil soup and kale salad were amazing with the presentation and taste of a high class restaurant. I will be back again and again!

Delicious!

I visited Holy Cow last week whilst visiting a friend in Edinburgh. My vegan boyfriend and I decided to check it out after a quick search here on Happy Cow and it was so worth it!

My boyfriend had the CBLT and a protein shake. I don't enjoy fake bacon but my boyfriend thought it was incredible. Also not a big fan of protein shakes either but it tasted really nice!

I had the soup of the day which was a red lentil curry soup. It was incredible, the perfect warming meal for a chilly winters day. The homemade bread it came with was a little dense for me but my boyfriend enjoyed it.

We grabbed a slice of peanut butter chocolate cake as well to take away. This was essentially vegan chocolate cake with peanut butter instead of icing For people that love peanut butter this is definitely a winner.

The staff were really lovely to chat to and the decor was very modern and comfortable.

I was all impressed to see that they were taking into considerations reviews and had implemented a suggestion of a reviewer on Happy Cow to bring out salt, pepper and ketchup with the meal.

Pros: nice atmosphere, excellent food

Lovely cake!

I've been to Holy Cow a few times now. I love their cakes - especially the lemon drizzle. The coffee is also good. I was a bit disappointed with the CBLT but the homemade bread was fantastic. I loved the bloody burger - beetroot - it is amazing. The burger, the bun, the trimmings, the chips... all so tasty. The staff are excellent, informative, friendly and helpful.

Pros: Cake!, The staff

Cons: Downstairs so inaccessible to wheelchair users

Lovely secret

I've walked past this gorgeous little cafe before without realising it was there, but after seeing some great reviews on here for it, I looked this place out and I'm very glad I did!

I got the fish burger and a green smoothie. The burger was delicious and had a fairly convincing fish flavour. The chips were also very moreish. The smoothie contained aloe vera (which I think is a lovely flavour anyway), and this was the nicest aloe vera flavoured drink I've ever had!

Other reviewers have noted that this place is expensive, but it isn't outlandishly so in my opinion (£9.50 for a very large burger and chips), and is completely worth it.

lovely food and nice staff

I really enjoyed my Mexican Burger and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Small suggestion- maybe offer salt, pepper & Ketchup when you bring the food as I had to ask for all three. But really lovely food ?
