First night in Basel and came across even before I’d looked at the trusted Happy Cow app. Loads of interesting and tasty vegan options on the buffet, including salads, stews, and desserts. Really impressed.

This was such a treat! Perfect for a Sunday morning brunch. It's great that everything is vegetarian, and the many vegan options are all well labeled (as are other allergy concerns). While I can't go through all the wonderful dishes I tried, I will note particularly that all of the potato variations were fantastic, and a vegan tiramasu with berries was lovely. They had two types of the New Roots cheese (I'd previously tried the camembert, which I can find in Munich, but I was excited (and pleasantly impressed) to finally try the pepper one too!)

Buffet system (not unilimited !), hot and cold meals. You pay for the quantity you put in your plate. High range of veggie and vegan choices. Samosas, fried onions, pizza, big variety of salads, pasta and vegetables, tajine, soups. I didn't try the sweet section but it looked nice too. But I was shoked by the price: 35chf for one (big) plate, welcome in Switzerland...

In the Tibits restaurant you have to pay for your food by gramm. So after you took it from the buffet, it gets weighed and that gives your price for the meal.

Read moreKurz bevor wir das Messegelämde verlassen wollten, wagte ich noch einen letzten Versuch um an ein veganes Stück Kuchen zu kommen. Auf dem restlichen Gelände war die Aussicht darauf leider total vergebens.
Glücklicherweise bot das Tibits dort nicht nur einen veganen Kuchen an sondern gleich drei verschiedene. Wir hatten die Wahl zwischen einem Brownie, Blondie und einem Passionfruit Cheesecake. Da der Cheesecake mit einer unwiderstehlichen Passionsfruchtglasur übersehen war, konnten wir nicht anders und ließen die Brownies und Blondiea diesmal liegen.
Der Kuchen schmeckte dann auch wunderbar nach Passionsfrucht - leider war die Konsistenz der "Käse"füllung nicht ideal (hatte schon durchaus bessere) und der Kuchen war zudem etwas wässrig. Der Boden widerum hatte die ideale Konsistenz und einen leicht salzigen Geschmack, was ich in Kombination mit der süßen Passionsfrucht als sehr angenehm empfand.

Die Preise sind entsprechend recht hoch.

‚The future is plantbased, is their new motto. They don‘t label vegan food anymore, they label vegetarian with L (for diary) and O (for eggs). 80-90% of their buffet is vegan.

If you are vegan the options are quite restricted, I don't like the fact that you have to weigh your food, quite expensive but good overall. More like an emergency option rather than a really satisfying cheat meal.

Can't recommend the buffet and eating in during the covid-pandemic - Edit
Generally, I am a huge fan of the tibits-restaurants. They have a good selection of tasty food. While certainly not cheap, it is still affordable for Switzerland.
Read moreBut I wasn't impressed at all with their hygiene measures due to the covid pandemic. They provide desinfectant and suggest that you wear a mask while on the buffet. They also suggest that people serving themselves on the buffet shouldn't be more than 8-10 persons. In reality, maybe 50% of their guests use the desinfectant, even less wear a mask, and there's no way to keep a distance of even 0,5 metres. Everyone could spit or cough on your food.
There are almost as many tables as during normal times. On some tables, there are acrylic glass "walls" to separate you from other people sitting next to you. But if you don't lean forward you still have no distance.
I didn't feel comfortable eating there. I don't understand why they put their guests at risk, and don't enforce wearing masks while at the buffet and bar/pay desk area. Maybe they think that people will avoid them if they do so. I will avoid them because they don't.
Once the covid pandemic is over this will be a great option again that deserves at least 4 stars.

Standard vegetarian/vegan Swiss restaurant - Edit
Tibits is the Go-to Place for most vegans and vegetarians in Switzerland. They have a high and varying buffet with clearly labeled vegan options. You pay by gram which gets pricy very quickly. After a while it gets boring but it’s a nice place to go for dining out with flexitarians or omnis, just be sure to make a reservation in advance because it gets very crowded. As the other Tibits restaurant, this place has a very nice and welcoming atmosphere. They also have a bar if you want to go for a drink and breakfast and takeaway options.
