I love The Butcher’s Son

I can’t really say much other than you need to go here and experience the food for yourself. Amazing food I always make an effort to get when I have an opportunity to do so. The killer blat is my favorite but of course I love adding on so many more items to the classic version. It doesn’t get much better than this!

One of my faves!

Burgers, sandwiches, salads, cookies, doughnuts, appetizers, cheese cake, a deli, and it's all vegan. You can't go wrong in this place. My fave is the jalapeño business (a steak and bacon hoagie) or the Cesar salad and something fishy (fried jackfruit). I've honestly have never had anything bad here. It's all good!

Pros: All vegan

Cons: There is always a line out the door 😉

A fave in the Bay!

It’s so so so good! Every single item I’ve had has been outstanding. My latest fave is the frittata, it seriously blew my mind. There’s always a line but is worth the wait!

Pros: Everything is delicious , They have a small grocery w in house fake meat, Very nice outside area

Cons: A tad expensive , Always a line

Disappointingly Bland

I must have gotten it on an off day but my food had no salt and no flavor. Had the fried chicken bagelwich. Bagel had no salt and spread had no salt. Chicken seitan was ok once I added hot sauce. Also had mozzarella sticks. Batter is great. Cheese was whatever.

Donut and cannoli were amazing. Must be another person.

Pros: Battering, Vybes , Baked goods!!

Cons: Flavorless, Long lines , Makes you sad a little

Food Coma

Traditional American comfort food veganized and delicious. We had the old timer with blueberry stuffed pancakes and the steak and egg hoagie. Pancakes were amazing!!! Fluffy, packed with wild blueberries, and oh so tasty... The bacon and steak both tasted like the real thing, although my wife and I have been vegan for a while now. The cheese on the hoagie was also very authentic nacho cheese. Portions are large so do not fear leaving hungry.

We also managed to cram in a pistachio cannoli and a cinnamon crumb donut which were both very good.

Line was long when we arrived and the place was pretty packed on a Sunday at about 12:30pm but the line moved fast and our food came relatively quick. There is seating out front and outside in the back in addition to the ten or so small tables inside.

Overall very good and we’d definitely visit again when we’re back in the area.

Pros: Extensive, exclusively vegan menu/grab n go items, Plenty of seating , Clean

Cons: Organic items unlabeled

Yum

Good food. Very popular place. There was a line out the door for the entire two hours we were there (on a weekday afternoon). Friendly service. Tasty sandwiches. Music was a tad too loud...hard to have good conversation.

Pretty good

If you miss big piles of meat on a huge bun, this is your kind of place! I’ve tried a few of their sandwiches, and they’re good, but I usually remove half the meat! I do like the Caesar salad, but I get it with no capers or Parmesan due to how salty the salad is! The macaroni salad, however, is perfect!

Pros: All vegan

Cons: Expensive , Overly salty

Good food

Very large and rich dishes. We took sandwiches and a salad. The food was good, but I think they should improve the spices in the tuna salad and the ceaser salad, so that they will have more fishy flavor. I really liked the moca latte and the pineapple cheesecake.

Pros: All vegan

Cruelty free feast

The Butcher’s Son did not disappoint with its huge delicious sandwiches! The meat analogs were incredible—so realistic in flavor, texture, and taste but without the animal cruelty. 🥳 A must visit when in the Bay Area.

Pros: Incredible in-house vegan meats and cheeses, Huge portions, Sit-down eating and a take-away market too!

Loved it!

I had the cheese sticks and the breakfast sandwich. So, so good! I’ve had many horrible versions of vegan cheese sticks and these were amazing! Great consistency and crunch. The bacon on my breakfast sandwich was wonderful-really great flavor and made in house. Also, I ordered a glazed donut which was VERY good. It was fried, airy with yeast dough instead of the usual vegan baked cake donut. I loved it! Reminded me of a Krispy Kreme!

Never a dull moment, nor a dull sandwich

I've made it a point to stop here every time i'm in the easy bay. I pretty much always get the chicken parm sando and a bunch of random stuff from their deli fridge. Its usually super busy when I go so ordering before with your phone is a good idea.

Pros: Like, a real full on vegan deli. , Jalapeno Business...

Cons: super busy, but still manageable.

Really hits the spot!

Had to drive a bit to go here but well worth the trip. The food was amazing. One of my fave food before I went vegan is a roast pork roll with gravy. This was some next level stuff.

Pros: Tastes amazing, Very well priced

It was ok

We had very high expectations and got let down. After visiting the Herbivorous Butcher in Minneapolis, it seems nothing really compares- but we’re bratty like that 😂 This place is totally decent, Reuben was ok- but there should never be onions on a Reuben..., a bit off putting. Mozzarella sticks were hard to get down. Buffalo chicken sandwich was good, the bacon is overly chewy. It’s a great neighborhood spot though and it was busy when we arrived, so we’re glad to see them doing well.

Vegan Deli done delicious

The Butchers Son does delicatessen deliciously! Had tried their sausages & sandwiches at a pop up event last year while visiting California's East Bay Area, was told they would be opening a brick and mortar location this year, and was excited to dine there this trip.
Yes, there is the traditional cold case, offering vegan meats & cheeses by the pound. Will save trying those for my next visit.
Good selection of deli style sandwiches, sides, appetizers & salads with fresh from the oven gourmet donuts & chocolate chip cookies for desserts the day we visited.
Because life can be short, eating dessert first is good and I opted for the bacon maple glazed donut as an appetizer. Fluffy cake donut, maple glazed topped with house made vegan bacon; highly recommend!
I enjoyed the savory Philly Cheesesteak, seasoned seitan, Swiss cheese, pickled jalapeños, grilled peppers, onions, mushrooms, mayo & lettuce on a French hoagie. Very, tasty, well seasoned fillings, and the hoagie sandwich bread was good, yet I would have preferred a whole wheat bun, just because that is how I like my bread. My side of potato salad was quite good; the dill is a fine touch, since I really like dill. Might be a bit much for those who prefer their potato salad less spicy. My dining companion had the Spicy Chicken B.L.A.T., garlic chili roasted chicken seitan, bacon lettuce, avocado, tomato & mayo on sour dough bread. The non-vegan declared it quite good, especially the fresh bread. Enjoyed the potato salad, too.
The hit of the experience? The cannoli donut... Nothing more to be said.
Prices are affordable, though my companion remarked on the donuts being pricey. Not so much to me since I am vegan, do a lot of vegan cooking, baking & eating, and appreciate the artistry that goes into crafting delicious, cruelty-free food.
Cash, credit, debit cards accepted. Dine in and take out. Drink case. Historic district area of Berkeley, so small, intimate space. Order at the counter, & your name will be called when ready.
On street parking. Busy around lunch time.
YEAH! Restaurant moved across the street; much bigger, brighter location, same great food. Marketplace added, with both refrigerated and shelf staple goods for purchase. And outdoor seating, out front along busy university ave, or in cozy back patio.
Finally made it for Sunday Brunch - well worth the wait! Had This Is My Addiction - bacon, scrambled tofu, avocado, mozzarella on toasted ciabatta bun, with side of home fries. Deliciously satisfying. Children enjoyed grilled cheese sandwiches from children's menu.

Disappointed

After reading the reviews, I was pretty excited about trying this place. I ordered mozzarella sticks, a Caesar Salad, the buffalo chicken sandwich and a slice of cheese cake. I wasn’t crazy about any of them. I was especially excited about the Caesar salad because not many places offer a vegan version. I wanted to try the raspberry or maybe it was strawberry 🤔 filled donut. They were out in the open and had flies on them. When my friend mentioned them to the cashier she stated there was nothing she could do about it. There were other donuts in a case so we didn’t understand why those were out in the open along with another kind.

Pros: Lots of options

You could serve this food to an omnivore

...and they would never know. The bacon and the macaroni salad look and taste just like the regular kind. My favorite is the lemon chicken sandwich with the bacon in it, the one near the top of the menu. Their sandwiches are overflowing with delicious contents, their mimosas are nice and strong, and their desserts are rich and sweet. Wish I could come here every day!!!! but I live out of state. New favorite place to eat in Berkeley though!!!

Pros: Amazing food and drinks , Amazing service , Portions, variety of choices

Cons: A little crowded

Fantastic options and crazy portions

You won't be disappointed by the amazing food menu and the gigantic portions. I'm a good eater and often find meal sizes too small for me. Not at this place! I'd say most people are probably full after eating half of the plate.
The quality of the food is quite good. However, some items could be more flavorsome. For example, the fried mozzarella sticks don't taste that cheesy to me and the jackfruit tuna on the tuna melt sandwich could use more seafood flavor. Also the sliced chicken and the meatballs have too much of a seitan flavor to me. Nevertheless, in combination with all the other flavors on the sandwich, it works really well and is quite the experience.

Try the cheesecake if you still have room in your belly for desert, yum! And, oh, the bacon, wow!

The vibe is quite nice and they have great seating options outside. Their marketplace is also a big plus for this place.

I'd come back any time, especially when seriously hungry. Too bad, that they don't offer their brunch menu all day every day...

Pros: All vegan but not advertised as that, Huge portions & creative menu , Nice vibe & fun to hang out

Cons: Brunch menu not available any time ;), Meat items good be better seasoned

Best mock meats ever!

We waited for 5 minutes and then the line got super long so we knew it was going to be good. The first bite of the food was just so great and I’m sure you could pick literally anything off the menu and be 110% satisfied. The steak and cheese sandwich was sooo good! Can’t wait to come to NorCal again!

Pros: The chicken pot pie was craaazy good! , The tuna sandwich was beyond amazing! , Staff was so friendly! Thank you!

Cons: No cons! You get what you pay for pricey or not
