Great Middle Eastern Fare - Edit
Stopped in DC on our way to Virginia to bask in the Impressionist artwork at the National Gallery and went to the original Shouk on K Street for lunch afterward. The location reminded me of a stately brownstone you might find on Boston’s Beacon or Newberry Street. There was limited seating in the raised dining area—my wife and I snagged a small table in a bay window with great street views. Although oil-free at home, I often make an exception when dining out. I was pleased to find that, while a number of dishes contain canola oil, several contain olive instead. Using the large wall-mounted touch screen to place and pay for our order was easy and stress-free. Staff were helpful in helping me choose my dishes and quick in preparing them. I started with the Za’atar Cauliflower: roasted cauliflower, chickpeas, roasted red peppers, greens, hummus, lemony chug, and a zig zag of tahini all served over a bed of white rice. The zesty Za’atar spices complimented and enhanced the subtle flavor of the cauliflower. The humus was lightly whipped and delicious, and the rice perfectly cooked. Next, I had the Shawarma Pita: seared oyster mushrooms, green cabbage, cucumber & onion, arugula, and creamy tahini. The pocket was served warm and the Shawarma spices washed the palette in a savory wave of foreign flavors. Along with these two main dishes, I had a side of kale salad doused in some kind of vegan cream sauce that brought a tasty tang to an otherwise standard flavor. The meal was delicious and reasonably priced, especially for DC. I look forward to a return visit.

Israeli street food in an American city made by Spanish-speaking people - Edit
This place claims to be a takeout/delivery place, so when I came in the windy and rainy afternoon, it was a great surprise that I could dine in! It says it serves street food, and even though I have never been to Israel, it really did feel like a very sophisticated street food. On the other hand, they say they try to do a lot for the government, and yet the only non-disposable dish I received was a metal tray. Everything else is wooden, plastic, or paper and goes to one bin. Culinarily, however, it was excellent. For ~$27 I got a main dish of cauliflower bowl ($13), and on top of that some pita bread ($1.5), hummus with pita chips ($6.5), and red lentil soup (~$4).

I ordered the "Fried Shouk’n" sandwich and it was very good. My omnivore father got the falafel sandwich and loved it. It was ready quickly.

Really wanted to try this place - Edit
I like to eat. I love using the Happy Cow app for traveling. I get to find all the great places to eat in different cities.
Read moreWhen I was checking out the places to try out in DC before I arrived I watched the great video on their website and I wanted to see if the great review that the person in the video was close to the level they were making it out to be.
Anyway, on my first night in DC, I walked over to the eatery and asked about eating in with real plates. They didn't. I figured I could just get the item wrapped in a wrapper and that would work for me instead of a disposable bowl and such. This would have been a compromise for me since I do not to eat off disposables.
My rating is based not on eating there. Eating lighter on the earth is more than just not eating animal products for me. I also cannot create the waste that so many eateries are partnering with the customers to create.
Unfortunately, their payment system would not accept my Canadian credit card or debit card.
I did write to them to ask if any of their other locations offer real plates - they don't. Pity about that
I walked over to Busboys and Poets and had a good meal there.

Quality Middle Eastern streetfood, with a lot of taste coming from the ingredients. Ordering is easy, limited seatings inside. The food was excellent, and something to head for in DCm!

Shouk sausage was so delicious. Cauliflower side very flavorful. Chocolate chip cookie with cardamom also fantastic. Hummus was a little blah, but it was given complimentary (not sure why).

Awesome vegan with gluten free options - Edit
My wife and I were visiting downtown DC on business. Decided to try Shouk based on reviews. Physically an attractive very casual place to grab a quick bite. The menu was varied and enticing. We of course tried there specialty burger on gluten free bun. Was very good. Would have another, but now I am interesting in trying other things on the menu.

Shouk had a nice variety of menu options. All of the food came out quick, and they had nice outdoor seating. The burger patty was big and filling, and it was so good we came back again on our trip.

Incredible and full of flavor - Edit
I ordered the falafel and hummus bowl. It was incredibly filling, a could barely finish it and I eat big portions (and am very pregnant!)
Read moreI ordered the shouk sausage for my 3 year old and it was so full of flavor, I might order it next time. Not too spicy for him, he ate almost the whole thing.
My husband ordered the mushroom shawarma pita. Still delicious, but not quite as good as the sausage... But mushrooms wouldn't really fill me up so I'm biased.
We all split the cardamon chocolate chip cookie and it's was so soft and thick
Edit- we went a second time for sausage and a burger. The burger had whole chickpeas and chunks of mushroom in it, it was very much a veggie burger and tasted very good if that's the kind of veggie burgers you like. Sweet potato fries were delicious too

Best veggie burger around - Edit
Delicious veggie burger that was packed with layers of flavor. It has a great texture, it isn’t trying to be any other kind of burger, it’s one of a kind.
Read moreMushroom shawarma bowl was also delicious, but add falafel/hummus. It’s cheaper then ordering a full side and it makes an amazing full meal if your hungry.

LOVE - Edit
Shouk has been on DC’s list of best restaurants, and it definitely lived up to the hype. All veggie/vegan Mediterranean food. I had the fried chik’n pita and the lentil soup, both excellent! The bread was soft and chewy, the sauces were great, and the mushroom chik’n was actually delicious, even though I’m not typically a mushroom fan.

We were in DC for the day and decided to get some lunch. We wanted something a little different, and I found Shouk on Happy Cow. We were not disappointed! We ordered the Mushroom Shawarma, Falafel on pita, Hummus (side) with extra pita, and a side of Israeli pickles. YUM. I devoured my shawarma. The pita is HEAVENLY - so soft and flavorful! Definitely recommend this place!
