This is how I (california) roll - Edit
Shizen is my favorite vegan restaurant in San Francisco. Everytime I go to Shizen I always order their California roll because they are so delicious. Check out my full review with lots of yummy photos on my blog: https://thatjenngirl.com/blog/1703/vegan-in-the-city-shizen

eat here!! - Edit
Food was delicious. We sat at the sushi bar so we got to ask what everything was and choose with our eyes. Chef was super nice and didn't mind us asking. Waited an hour on Sunday and was absolutely worth it.

Outstanding - Edit
Honestly, the best sushi around, vegan or otherwise. The food is outstanding but they are gonna make you wait for it. Unless you get here at opening, don't come hungry cause the wait is very long.

Awesome Food, Long Waitlist - Edit
I got to Shizen at 5:30pm on a Sunday evening as a party of one and still had to wait an hour to be seated. For me, traveling by myself with nothing else to do, the wait was totally worth it. The food was delicious and service very prompt. I had a wakame salad, gyoza, a boddy and soul specialty roll, and a hidden agenda specialty roll. All the food was delicious and fresh.
Read moreThey use a Yelp-based waitlist system which will text you when your table is almost ready, but then you've got five minutes to get there in person. So, while there are a couple cafes and such on nearby Valencia, someone needs to be ready at all times to high-tail it back there.
Pros: delicious, wide variety
Cons: waitlist

Worth the wait - Edit
I had heard about this place and it lived up to its reputation. It deserves five stars for taste, creativity and presentation. We liked Scarlet Smile but Boddy and Soul was even better and our favorite was called Hidden Agenda. I’ll be back the next time I’m in town. Even the omnivores who like traditional sushi thought this was pretty tasty. Miso soup and garlic edamame made good starters. Everything we saw looked fabulous and I wanted to try it all!

Amazing Experience - Edit
I am in San Francisco for a short trip this weekend and was so amazed by the restaurant I went twice on my three day trip. I had the sushi the first night and the ramen the second and would highly recommend both.

Good food - Edit
I went on a Sunday night and had a considerable waiting line. It was worth it, because the food was very delicious. I advise you to search for the dishes first, since the menu is quite large. Great experience, though a bit pricey. Nice food.

Delicious! Went with my Japanese friend who is not vegan and very picky. We both enjoyed the asparagus, croquettes, assorted mushrooms, veggie curry with rice and the fried banana ice cream dessert. Highly recommend!

Phenomenal restaurant, the must try vegan restaurant in San Francisco!
Read moreOur wait was 2 hours... only downside is it was hard to find something to do in the neighborhood.
We were sat at the sushi bar, which was amazing!! We got to see all the rolls and the sushi chefs were incredibly friendly and helpful.
We got the shoyu ramen; which included such amazing meat substitutes. There is a pork that is smoky and sweet, exactly how I imagine pork to take.
Next we got two rolls and two nigiris. Both were out of this world. My meat eating boyfriend said it’s the best sushi he’s ever had!
Overall, one of the best meals. Every single part was outstanding and I hope to be back as soon as I can!
Pros: outstanding menu, amazing food, fun atmosphere
Cons: the wait - but well worth it!

I Could Eat Here a Lot - Edit
Good thing we’re just visiting or we’d be regulars.
Read moreWe arrived just after five on a Thursday with our whole party and were seated immediately! We were honestly expecting to wait a while after reading other reviews.
The food was so delicious! We wanted to try a little of everything and the flavors were on point. I haven’t enjoyed Japanese vegan food so much!
I loved how creative the specialty sushi rolls were, something we are lacking in our hometown. It was exciting. If we didn’t have other places on our “try it” list, we’d keep coming back for the remainder of our trip. Also, I will say that it’s a bit out of the way of typical tourist spots. As tourists, we bussed and walked there, but it took a while. On our way back, we caught a Lyft—our kids we’re too tired by then! Not a big deal, though, and it was well worth the commute.
Pros: great Japanese flavors
Cons: a little far from where tourists generally stay

Worth the Hassle - Edit
Before you even consider going to Shizen, you have to be ready to wait. They don't take reservations and in my experience it typically takes at least an hour to get seated. That being said, this is some of the best food I've ever eaten as a vegan or otherwise. I've never regretted waiting to eat here, just know that it's something you should plan for. Every item on the menu is unique and creative. Aside from their sushi I recommend trying their potstickers and their ramen. Their specialty rolls are a lot of fun for a group. I'd recommend picking out at least one of those to share.

honestly, I wasn't impressed - Edit
we waited for way too long and the food was ok.. we ordered one of the specialty rolls, it was tasty but i've had better vegan sushi (if you want to have really good vegan sushi go to beyond sushi in NYC).. the dumplings were fine..
Read moreI think there are better vegan options in san francisco that aren't this expensive. We spent way too much for what it was, considering parking near there was $15 as well.. and a glass of wine was $14..
However, the place is very nice and simple..I enjoyed the modern design and atmosphere..if you are looking for a kinda fancy, kinda pretentious atmosphere this place will be great for you. Maybe i didn't order the right things?

Best Sushi I've Ever Had - Edit
Shizen is absolutely incredible with the creative home made vegan sushi and ramen! I took some non-veg family here and they said it was the best sushi they had had as well. We got spicy garlic ramen, a couple specialty rolls, and a honeydew sorbet for dessert, everything was so delicious and hand prepared.
