too sweet 😓

I ordered two cakes for my birthday and was heavily disappointed and embarrassed at how it tasted. It looked amazing though! Beautifully colorful and presented well but oh god... we could not eat it. My guests were polite on the day but later admitted it was inedible.

I pride myself on my vegan cooking that I like to invite my non vegan family and friends to enjoy and I left someone else to do the baking but unfortunately won’t be ordering from them again. I also heard from a family friend who is a caterer that she did an all vegan dinner party and her client had ordered birthday cakes from them too and they also had a similar experience to mine and had to throw it out.

I really don’t like to leave bad reviews but sometimes it might be the feedback they need to improve their product because as a vegan person I would love for a vegan bakery to kick every other bakery’s ass! I hope to see some improvements on the future if I ever decide to go into the store one day to enjoy a treat and give them another chance.

Amazing cakes and more!

I've been here a few times for cupcakes, lunch (e.g. "tuna" melt) and to collect birthday cakes I've ordered.

Everything was delicious and I really love the choice of flavours. My favourite was some sort of chocolate and rum flavour; I think it had cherries too.

Om nom nom.

Pros: Delicious, Can order cakes, Amazing flavours

Cons: No cons

Love it!

This place has the cutest decor and the best bakes goods in the city so I'm not sure what more you could want? Everyone working there was lovely and I was only sad that I couldn't fit in more cake. The babka was ridiculously delicious and I'm a cake baker with high standards and I loved their cupcakes. My husband also enjoyed a pretzel dog which he thought was great and I'm already planning a return trip.

My favourite vegan cafe in Melbourne!

This gem is worth travelling out to Ascot Vale for! So many amazing sweet and savoury options, all baked fresh.

I got the pretzel dog, which was incredible - the dough was so thick and luscious. My partner got the savoury potato danish, which had this AMAZING creamy sauce.

For dessert, I got cinnamon sugar bronut, which is a donut with brioch batter (which is an "eggy" style bread). This was delicious, very thick and fresh. My partner got the peanut butter brownie, which he loved. Their brownies are ranked in the top 5 brownies in Melbourne by the Age newspaper and lived up to this reputation - definitely worth a try!

I also got a soy chai latte, which was delicious. They offer soy, almond, coconut and cashew milk.

We got a massive cinnamon bun to take-away, so we look forward to trying that and coming back here again and again. They also offer catering, which looks amazing, and I'm thinking about trying that.

Pros: All vegan, Both savoury and sweet options, Super fresh

Sandwiches a bit too dense

I was interested to try out the sandwiches here after I'd had a bad experience with a cake order (icing-to-cake ratio too high). We came here for lunch and ordered a meatball sub and a chickpea 'tuna' roll, which looked delicious in the display cabinet. The 'tuna' flavour was very intense, tasting strongly of onion and/or garlic but not a thing like tuna (which is fine). The meatballs were OK too, with their own (slightly sweet) flavour accompanied by a Napoli sauce and grated vegan cheese. This would be fairly reasonable for $11. The problem for me was that both of these sandwiches were too dense, without enough moistness or salad to stop them turning into dough in my mouth. By the second half it was difficult to eat them without drinking half a glass of water per bite.

nice enough

My first taste of Mr Nice Guy's goods was when they donated a bunch of leftovers to the launch of Tilde trans and gender diverse film fest. Their generous donation lives up to their name and maybe it's a bit unfair of me to judge their offerings on day old pastries but I didn't like them. What they used to call a chocolate croissant is nothing like a croissant - it's sweet doughy bread rolled in to a croissant shape. I think they call it a babka now which might be more accurate, I dunno.

It was a while before I actually went in store and bought something. First visit, I got a bagel with fake bacon, etc, which was tasty enough but not worth the dough, IMO. Bought a couple of sweet things as well. I think a cheesecake. Obviously none were very memorable. I usually find all of their stuff just sugary and bland. I don't really get why heaps of people seem to love it.

I popped in again today and they sort of redeemed themselves in my eyes. I gave the pretzel dog a try. The bread is the same sweet brioche type they make everything from but it worked here with pretzel salt on top. Could've done with some sauce or mustard though. Grabbed a cinnamon "bronut" (brioche donut) too which was actually delicious. Dunno what distinguishes it from a donut exactly but it's soft and doughy, super fried and a bit crispy on the outside. I ate it in the bath so that probably made it extra decadent.

Overall, Crumbs across the road gets my vegan dollar but Mr Nice Guy obviously has his fans.

Best vegan cakes in Melbourne

I can't believe I haven't left a review for this place yet. This is the best vegan cake shop in Melbourne, and everything else they do is great too. I've taken my non-vegetarian family here for brunch a few times and they all loved it. The bagels are fantastic, I highly recommend the vegan egg one. The coffee is also great, and obviously the cakes are amazing. I've also ordered giant birthday cakes from here a few times, and they were magnificent. I love this place so much.

Pros: Friendly staff, Cakes are top notch, Lots of GF options

Best Ever!

If you want to give the best ever gift, order someone a giant cup cake from Mr. Nice Guy. And when you pick it up, sit outside and treat yourself to a pretzel dog while you soak up the Ascot Vale ambience. The giant cupcake is a delicious work of art, worth every cent. The pretzel dog is the best veg hot dog I have experienced. Coffee scrolls are also almost 'too good for words'.

Pros: Huge range of cakes, Easy on-line ordering, all vegan

Cons: too far from my place!

The Best.

I cannot say anything bad about this place. Everything here is brilliant. The service, the coffee, the cakes, the sweets, the bagels, the scrolls, the colour of the walls. The place is fantastic and its the only place I ever go if I want to buy a bloody good cake. Who cares if it's vegan…it beats ALL other cakes, vegan or not. They are great for a light lunch also, but who can eat a light lunch when there are things like French Toast flavoured cupcakes, chocolate cherry balls, cinnamon scrolls, donuts, raw cheesecakes, cheesy triangles and large cakes on request. Damn you Mister Niceguy (from my jeans).

Pros: Everything.

Cons: There isn't one next door to my house.

Fantastic!

Went for the first time last weekend and were really looking forward to it. The food was more than we hoped and it was well worth the over an hour drive to get there. Staff were delightful.
The savoury goodies are as fabulous as the sweet. Definitely try the raw cup cakes and the curried 'egg' bagel, the cheez and spinach scroll... :) ALL the cup cakes look amazing. Took a box home!
Planning to make it a regular event.

Pros: Fabulous food, Friendly staff, Did I say fabulous food?

Sweet tooth heaven

I love this place. I love sitting outside at the cute little tables with freshly picked flowers, or inside where I can read the papers, magazines and books.
I love the selection of sweet treats. Besides cupcakes, there is bagels, babka, cheesecakes and all sorts of baked good. They even have raw or fructose free food. Sweets and savouries, try a bit of both!
The service is always friendly and the place is vegan.
I love the hazelnut milk coffee, but you could also have soy or almond milk if you prefer.
Every day is different, always many choices.

Pros: All vegan, freshly baked, nice ambience

Cons: price
