5 stars - come early! - Edit
This was one of the best meals we had in Japan, and the atmosphere made it even more special. I was so happy to experience something truly authentic. The staff were wonderful, and the food arrived quickly.
Read moreI had the vegan okonomiyaki with soy meat, and it did not disappoint!
Seating is limited, so I’d recommend arriving before opening. It opens at 4 PM on Fridays—we got there at 3:40 and were the first in line, but a queue formed quickly. By the time we left, it was huge!

WISH I COULD GIVE 5 STARS!! - Edit
Wow, what an experience!!! First of all, we got there around 6pm on Saturday and waited about one hour to get in. We were so excited we could not care less about the wait. We ordered whilst waiting and when we went in our food was ready!! The food was INCREDIBLE and the vibes of the restaurant were even better. One of our favourite parts of our Kyoto trip😄

Delicious okonomiyaki - Edit
We came to this place twice. Love the traditional atmosphere and the food. They have a dedicated vegan menu with many dishes including okonomiyaki, which is a must try. I got the regular one and the one with added soba. They also have vegan mayo and vegan okonomiyaki sauce. The only thing that maybe some people might dislike is that they serve the food on a common hotplate then there might be a minimum contamination (never happened btw).

Wish I could give 5 - Edit
Don’t sleep on this spot. Partner got the vegan okonomiyaki and I got the vegan negiyaki with Mochi. We both agreed, the negiyaki was where it’s at.
Read moreA lot of flavor and an incredible view/location. Wonderful place to just take a break from the rest of the world and enjoy.
Pros: Negiyaki was mind opening

Great family meal, lots of vegan consideration - Edit
Gion Tanto was a bucket list stop for me as I had heard about Okinamiyaki from my brother who has been living here in Japan! He recommended we try it but noted that I may not be able to find any vegan versions. This location proved him wrong with a flavour packed meal! They give you specific vegan sauces (sweet sauce and mayo) to add on top too and lots of seasoning to your liking! My family is all not vegan, but we have a lot of allergies and restrictions, so it was great to be able to eat the things we could together in a very traditional floor seated cozy vibe!
Read moreBe aware, line up early if you can. They are efficient but it is only limited seating! So come ready to wait in their waiting room for a bit or outside.
Pros: Communal feeling, Vegan and allergy consideration, Flavour packed
Cons: Longer waiting, Some vegans may not be comfy with sharing teppan

Really cool experience - Edit
We arrived at 4:30 PM and walked straight in - that might be the trick to avoiding a long queue! Food was great, very easy to order vegan options and the staff gave us labelled vegan condiments. Loved the vibe and the small cosy tables - really fun experience!

Ok - Edit
I ate the stir fried noodles, since the okonomiyaki comes with a lot of sauce and it‘s just too sweet for me. The noodles were nothing special to be honest. The restaurant vibe seemed nice but the meat smell was uncomfortable.

Amazing, worth the wait - Edit
There was a large queue as we arrived but that can be a part of a Japanese dining experience due to lots of restaurants having limited capacity. Food was amazing and a beautiful atmosphere with the restaurant being right on the river!

Looks like a family restaurant, staff was friendly and welcoming. There’s a queue which isn’t surprising for any good place. I think the vegan options were great. The food is delicious and good quality.

Long wait for Okonomiyaki - Edit
We got there around 6:10pm and waited about 1.5 hours to be seated - we expected a long wait, but we had a big lunch so we weren't super hungry. Our first time trying vegan Okonomiyaki and Yakisoba which was a fun experience, but not sure it's worth the wait. But there are generally limited vegan options in the Higashiyama area and we wanted to try some authentic Japanese cuisine.

Delicious food - Edit
We shared the Negiyaki, Okonomiyaki and noodles, and all three were delicious. We came early by 5pm, although not quite early enough (they open at 4:30, their instagram is incorrect and says 5pm) so had to wait about 30 minutes to be seated. Worth the wait, but also worthwhile coming early if you can, as the queue was twice the length by the time we left. Very traditional experience, which we haven’t encountered in solely vegan restaurants in Japan to date. Was slightly disappointed as we wanted to try Teppanyaki, but they no longer offer a vegan option.

Cozy and delicious - Edit
Food was great and ambience is really nice, very japanese. As it's a bit small and cozy you may need to wait a bit, but it's worth it. There even are specific vegan sauces you get with your Okonomiyaki (soy, sweet Sōsu and Mayonnaise).

Nice Japanese traditional resto - Edit
Few vegan options. The noodle with vegetable is really nice. But when you enter the restaurant it can have meat smell quit strong as food continue to cook on the table (see picture). I was also not sure if they really make sure the vegan food never touch any ustensiles used at same time to cook meet. But except this its a nice and friendly place.

Good food but 'the vibe' was not for me - Edit
My partner got the soy meat okonomoyaki and I got the soy meat negiyaki. I wasn't really sure what the difference was going to be when I ordered, mine had a lot more spring onion in it and on top of it and no sauce on top. We were provided with bottles of vegan sauces so I could easily add as much sauce as I wanted.
Read moreI really enjoyed the food, there was good flavour in the pancake and the soy meat chunks added some food texture (not a lot of taste though). My partner enjoyed her okonomoyaki too, she only got a couple of pieces of meat though and said they were quite big and had a good flavour so maybe the meat chunks used were different in the two dishes. She really liked the sauce on top too.
This is a small place which seats about 20 people. We got there about 10 minutes before opening and a queue formed quickly. There were only 2 free seats just after opening and they were filled quickly too. You take off your shoes and sit on the floor at teppenyaki style tables. We were sat at the long bar bit and when that's full you're sat shoulder to shoulder with others which isn't really what I want at the end of a long hot day. When we left after about 50 minutes, the waiting area was full with more people looking in from outside. They have a sign up saying vegan food takes longer to prepare, so even though we ordered first two other tables for their food before us. I enjoyed the food but I don't know if I'd have been so glowing if I'd had to wait a long time for it.

You have small but nice selection of vegan meals, including Okonomiyaki in 3 different variations.

The only problem is that the place is very popular and you need to wait, but surprisingly the queue is going quite fast.

Good option for vegan okonomiyaki - Edit
Glad to be able to try more veganized version of traditional Japanese food. I picked the okonomiyaki with mochi and corn as filling and fried udons. Both were really good. They are prepared and then set in the large cooking plate on your table, so it stays warm and keep on cooking a bit. Delicious and filling.

Vegan okonomiyaki! - Edit
We may be the luckiest people alive as we rolled up to this place on a recommendation and waited 20 mins to eat. I loved the okonomiyaki, my only light criticism is that is has a LOT of sweet sauce on it. Super good and may return on this trip.
