Lovely vegetarian restaurant with creative interpretations of classic dishes made with plant based ingredients. Nice tables outside to have lunch on a sunny day.

Delicious Dinner - Edit
Nice ambiance (went on a night where it wasn’t too busy) and attentive staff. About half the menu is vegan. Really delicious enchiladas and tiramisu!

Good place, not so good building - Edit
Eaten here several times. Food is good (prefer their Marylebone restaurant) but the building has high ceilings and little to dampen the noise - meaning when it’s busy it can become very loud with chatter

Gone downhill - Edit
Used to be great but whilst other restaurants are getting better feels like this place is going downhill. The menu feels dated and hasn't changed much in years, I actually think they have drastically reduced it since covid. The food is average, not horrible but not worth the price. The service we received was poor and there was pretty much no atmosphere, even on a Friday night, I just wanted to eat and get out of there. Sadly not an enjoyable experience and for the price there are much better options. I hope they make improvements because I used to love this place.

The Gate - Edit
I like the decor/ambiance of this The Gate best for some reason. The food is usually almost exactly the same as the other locations, which is always tasty. (I consistently order the polenta fries, yum!) Definitely recommend you stop by if you find yourself peckish while in the area. See attached photos of their tasty food.

The food was very good, with interesting flavours and variety. They use all natural ingredients. Almost all the food is vegan. The staff are friendly and helpful. It’s expensive but it’s a nice place for special occasions.

Delicious - Edit
I love The Gate restaurant chain - the menu is now fully vegan and there a really good variety of choice in dishes.
Read moreWe had the fried tofu as our starter.
For mains we had the tortilla, the vegan burger and the veggie gyoza. All three mains were extremely tasty - really lovely and fresh, rich flavours.
For dessert we tried the sticky toffee pudding (amazing) and the chocolate mouse ball (also very nice).
The service towards the end, when we were ordering and waiting for our desserts, became a lot slower. However this was partly due to the fact the restaurant had become extremely busy and was completely full. The staff were apologetic of the wait and the ambience generally in the restaurant was really lovely.
Just to note, this is quite an expensive restaurant and I would never usually pay the amount I paid for this dinner. However the quality of the food is high, which makes up slightly for the elevated prices.
They do a great lunch deal menu during the week as well, for either two courses or three courses.
Pros: All vegan and vegetarian, Amazing food, Great dessert options
Cons: Expensive

Amazing!!! - Edit
I went here with my aunt and grandma last week (neither of whom are vegan or vegetarian) and we all absolutely loved it! Just walking past, you could almost miss the entrance to it, as it's right off the side. However, if you're looking there is a clear sign marking the restaurant. We arrived on time for our reservation (which I would strongly recommend having as it was full!) and were seated right away. Everything on the menu looked amazing and it was so hard to choose what to order; I wanted everything! We started by sharing two appetizers: the miso-glazed aubergine and the courgette flower. Both were great, though I think I have to say the aubergine was my favourite. There were so many different flavours to it and it was something a bit different. We then ordered three different mains and shared them between us. We got the aubergine schniztel, thai red curry and ginger gyozas. Again, all were amazing and were presented beautifully! If I had to pick a favourite (though it's so hard!!), it might have been the aubergine schniztel. It was something really unique and all the layers in it were amazing. Overall, I'd strongly recommend coming to the Gate and the next time I'm in London, I'd love to come again.

Not for me - Edit
I found the service extremely slow, it took about 40 minutes just to serve starters. The food was normal, however what I found surprising, in negative, were the price/portion ratio. The cheapest main in this place is about 14 pounds.

Great vegan set lunch menu - Edit
I’ve been to The Gate four times now and it’s been consistently excellent.
Everything was good, from the portion sizes to the presentation, to the variety of different dishes you can order. Always enjoy it here.
They offer a very reasonably priced set lunch menu which is great and you get a glass of Prosecco.
I’ve noticed it’s pretty much all vegan options these days and as time goes on, it would be nice to see it transition into a totally vegan restaurant.
I honestly can’t say I’ve ever ordered anything here that I’ve been disappointed with, until sadly, when I visited there for my birthday on December 26th 2019.
I ordered the Thai curry that I’ve had before and it’s been great, but this time, I don’t know if too much curry paste was added, but it was almost inedible. This is coming from someone who’s favourite travel destination is south east Asia. I love hot Thai curry.
We were going to say something, but as it was my birthday someone in our party quickly swapped dishes with me, so that we would not have to wait for something else to be prepared. He however, was unfortunately unable to finish all of it, due to it’s spiciness. We did say as the waitress collected our plates, that it was too far too hot but as we had not said anything initially I don’t think it was taken into account too much. However I would like to mention something now so hopefully it can be looked at for future customers, including myself.
Other than the Thai curry, I really do recommend The Gate. The vegan brownie I had for dessert was just amazing, one of the best I’ve had. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive too. Just a shame that on my birthday visit, I ordered something that clearly, mistakes had been made with, in the kitchen.
However I’m not put off for another visit in the future.
Pros: I believe the gate is fully vegan now , Good locations

Always delicious - Edit
EDITED TO ADD:
Read moreThe festive menu (Dec. 2019) was amazing. The vegan chocolate ball dessert with mousse inside was oh so delicious!
I have been there several times on special occasions (date/birthday) and I was never disappointed. My favourite is the vegan risotto. The starters are also amazing. I like how tucked away the place is. Very romantic in the evening. Definitely book in advance as I was sent away when I hadn't!
Pros: Vegan options, Romantic, classy atmosphere, Starters are divine
Cons: A bit pricey, Vegan desserts are not all great, Menu doesn't change much

Lovely experience - Edit
I really enjoyed the evening here. I've had Thai red curry which was delicious and full of flavour... We shared polenta fries which were very satisfying. At the end we have shared a vegan tiramisu, which was probably the best vegan tiramisù I've tried. Really good food. Yes, it's pricey, but if you don't add alcohol on top of your bill, the food is a good value for money considering what you get.

Not Impressed - Edit
The Gate is a vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Hammersmith. The building has a is very particular entrance that gives the impression you are going to church. Even the smell in the hall isn’t the best, kind of Sunday-school like! The restaurant itself is on the first floor. The room is fairly quiet and doesn’t have many tables. The ceiling is very high with a large window that allows the whole restaurant to be lit without the need for artificial light. The furniture is very simple, kept to the bare minimum, something in between minimal, arte povera and wrought-iron; a style that lately seems to be a must in London, if you want your bar to be instagramable and hipster at the same time. The décor has been completed with green leafy plants and industrial style nude bulbs hanging from the ceiling. The jazz music in the background makes the atmosphere enveloping and sophisticated, making you feeling like a freelancer drinking black americano in Brooklyn.
Read moreDuring the weekend, The Gate offers the Sunday Roast menu which includes two courses for around £20. The artichoke terrine with a dried tomato paste and grilled bread left me somewhat confused, too salty for my taste, if eaten all together with bread and sauce, it’s not so bad. The presentation of the dish was very pretty and the bread was freshly baked. The beetroot burger with fries and greens on the side is not their forte. The salad has fresh taste with the tasty Dijon mustard vinaigrette. The burger instead, pretty rubbery, basically a pink chemical agglomerate that can easily be found at the supermarket and the matchstick chips were really thin, on the plate more as a decoration. The service is really slow, even when the restaurant isn’t crowded.
It wasn’t a bad experience, but few things were just not right. I don’t know if it deserves another try…
Pros: location, Friendly staff
Cons: long wait, bit pricey

The Final Days of May - Edit
We came here at the end of May to serve the website I love. Having experienced The Gate Islington a few times it was a pleasure to have the opportunity to sample their Hammersmith operation. I think I like it even better. Two extremely solid meals, a Thai green curry and an aubergine teriyaki. Pleasant interior, welcoming exterior and nothing inferior. With a carafe of house white and the 12.5% discretionary but socially mandatory “London tax” (which to be fair does go directly towards staff tips here rather than their wages) the bill came to £54. Quite cheap actually considering the couple next to us spent £129. Here is London, home of the brash, outrageous and free.

The toffee pudding was great. I ended up drinking a bottle of mineral water in a few seconds afterwards.

Mushroom Festival - Tasting Menu - Edit
This is by far one of the best vegan meals I've ever had.
Read moreMy only criticism is they did ask us to be early, which we were, and then told us to go away until 17.00pm. Staff promptly locked the door. We had nowhere to go and so sat outside in the freezing cold until they let us - and all the other guests who arrived early in - at 17.10pm. Apart from that service was excellent.
We have found that Tasting Menus tend to be all artsy and feature a dot of this and a smear of that but light on actual food. That is not the case at The Gate. Sure, I didn't want 7 full plates of food either and they got the portions spot on. It was also - at ₤50 a head - still affordable. Which is often not the case with these kind of food events. Didn't like the 'discretionary' 12.5% fee which is kind of compulsory as it's added to your bill.
Apparently they do an annual Mushroom Festival and this was it. The menu was written in fancy food speak but basically we had -
Dumpling with a Sweet Chili Sauce
Consomme
Arancini Balls
Galette topped with Salad
Gnocchi and Pesto
Black Rice Cake, Wilted Greens + Creamy Mushrooms
Semifreddo with Brandy Sauce
It was a good meal and a great evening.

High end dining - Edit
I had heard lots of hype around the Gate - so my expectations were high - but I was little disappointed. The food was of a good standard, but for the price I would expect more. Perhaps because it was busy it wasn’t as good as usual. I don’t know. But the desserts were delicious, they were definitely worth the price. And they did have vegan options which were inventive and original.

Great vegan options, in a relaxed friendly setting. The food was delicious, topped with amazing desserts. My non-vegan companion said it was the best chocolate brownie with cream they’d ever tasted. Service was a little bit slow - but only to be expected with a large party in...and an apology was made. Will definitely return again next time in London.
