Would give 5 stars!

The menu is very clear what's vegan. There is enough choice, almost all of the meals have a vegan option. Staff is very friendly and helpful. And it is really delicious! Would definitely go back there!

Our neighborhood spot

The owners here are so nice and really go out of their way. We love the mapo tofu and the yuba dish.

LOVE - best mapo tofu outside of China!

Although in Happy Cow it says this is Japanese food, it is more Chinese really. The chef is enthusiastic and really friendly and was happy to chat and talk about his food.
There are vegan options for most of the dishes.
The mapo tofu has to be the best we've had outside of China (and we had a lot in China!), its so authentic tasting and full of flavour.

Would give 5 stars if I could!

Come for the food, come back for the atmosphere

Going to a new city for the first time is always a bit of a gamble. Where can we get good food? HappyCow is here to change the odds in our favour, but still it's always a guess. Before travelling to Nagoya I checked the HappyCow website to make sure there is enough opportunity to eat. But when I actually arrived in Nagoya I found out I made a mistake: many vegan restaurants here only serve lunch, not dinner.

So I was left with the list of "serves meat, has vegan options". These are places I only visit if there's nothing else available. Based on the pictures and reviews I choose Saizencyuka anzu. It's a 10 minute walk from Nagoya station and Google Maps will take you right to the doorstep.

The moment I came in I was welcomed with a warm and friendly smile plus the question "vegan"? Yes! Vegan! An English menu is available and the vegan options are clearly marked. While trying the make a choice the chef came for a little talk. Are you vegan? Where are you from? How long will you stay in Nagoya? I like it when the staff takes personal interest in their guests!

I ordered the tofu salad and mapo tofu (also known as "mapo doufu" or "mabo tofu"). The tofu salad looks so beautiful that it feels like a waste to eat. It's colourful, it's beautifully arranged and it even looks tasteful. And yes, it certainly is. A splendid combination of ingredients and a very tasty sesame dressing.

The mapo tofu is served so hot that it actually makes a sound. Saizencyuka anzu uses different spices for mapo tofu, but the result is the same: a tasty blend of soft tofu and spicy sauce.

While eating I overheard how the chef explained other guests what they were eating, where the ingredients came from and how he prepared it. And that's what so great about Saizencyuka anzu: the chef takes pride in his work and treats his customers like guests. That's why you come to Saizencyuka anzu for the food, but you come back for the atmosphere.

Pros: great food, warm, welcoming atmosphere

Cons: not cheap (but worth it), also serves meat

The best vegan food in Japan

There was a lot of vegan options in the menu. It was the best vegan food I had in Japan, even my carnivorious boyfriend enjoyed and praised it. The owner was very delighted to hear our thoughts and took a picture with us to hang on the wall.
It's a small family restaurant and the hospitality was charming.

Cute place with nice vegan options

The owner was very friendly and the menu had plenty of vegan options. I had some soy bites with salad and my non-vegan friend had the spicy noodle soup. We both loved the food!
The ice-cream dessert was also very nice.

Pros: Plenty of vegan options.

Heartful place

We ordered sezhuan pickles for starter, stir fried vegetables, tofu and beans in spicy sauce and noodles. Everything was very tasty and a bit unusual. Chinese inspired health food with loads of flavors. The couple running this cozy little place seem very genuine about the food they serve. The owner was keen to know why we were vegan and what we think about the dishes he cooked us and about began food in general in Japan. He’s hoping more Japanese people will understand the health and environmental benefits there are to a vegan diet. I recommend a visit!

Pros: Healthy food , Heartful owner, Exciting menu

Amazing vegan food in Nagoya

We had a great experience at this restaurant! The food was delicious and the chef and owner is so nice!He doesn't use GMO or refined sugar. The vegan options are indicated on the menu (English menu available) so it's really easy to choose. We had the vegetables with yuba (very tasty, our first time trying yuba) and the spicy Chinese dish (tofu and soy meat). Very tasty and fresh! I definitely recommend this place if you are in Nagoya!

Pros: Vegan options indicate at menu (English), Amazing food, Natural seasoning, chef and owner sweet person

Fantastic noodles!

Pros: Veel veganistische opties. , Supervriendelijke mensen. , Fantastisch lekker.

Cons: Geen.

Amazing Vegan Food!

I prefer somewhere that can do both vegan and meat so my husband and I can both enjoy our meals. This place had the best vegan meals so far in Japan for us. The vegan crispy soy ‘chicken’ tasted amazing! The chef could speak some English and as we were the last ones in the store came and chatted to us. He gave us the complimentary dessert as well which was delicious.

Best vegan food - 5 stars!

Would give 5 stars but happy cow doesn’t allow that for places that are non-veg. For me places that have both meat and vegan options are better as it suits both me and my husband who is a meat eater...

Lovely little restaurant with clearly labelled vegan options. Kind staff (chef and his wife) who were very friendly. They gave us a free little dessert at the end of the meal.

Great food, and by far the best option for vegans in Nagoya. We will go back tomorrow I’m sure.

Vegan choices included fried soy ‘chicken’, soy ‘pork’ in black vinegar, vegan tantanmen ramen, mapo tofu with soy mince and some salad options that I don’t remember.

Just go, even if it’s a little out of your way! And if you do go and you like it, leave them a review on tripadvisor - they deserve every success

Edit: we ate here all 3 nights we were in Nagoya in the end! The mapo tofu and tantanmen ramen were my favourite dishes.

Pros: Cute place, Lovely staff, Low prices

Cons: Could stock cans / bottles of Japanese craft beer

Amazing service

The restaurant is located about 20 minutes walk from the Nagoya Castle but is definitely worth the walk! The owner of the shop is so nice and it is really a nice and cozy place to eat. The food was really nice with a lot of vegan options compared to many other places in Japan. I can highly recommend it.

Pros: Amazing food , Formidable staff , Very cozy atmosphere

Cons: Not the best location, you have to walk a bit.

Best vegan food in Nagoya

This is hands down the best vegan food in Nagoya. The chef Hiroshi has an incredible amount of care and consideration for the customer, and it shows in the details like the vegan egg he created for the tantanmen, which incidentally is the best I've had in Japan. The black vinegar soy meat is also the best I've had. I will be stopping here in future trips.

Pros: great food, well labeled, friendly chef

Cons: none

Best vegan food in Japan!!

Had some incredible sweet, sticky soy meet and vegetables, which were even topped off with some cucumber butterflies and edible flowers. We also had the schezuan noodle soup which again was amazing. The chefs wife was lovely enough to bring out some coconut yoghurt pudding for us to try (it was so good!!). After we finished our meals the chef came out to chat with us about our trip to Japan. He and his wife are so lovely and we are super thankful to have eaten at their sweet little restaurant - might go back tomorrow!

Pros: food, atmosphere, service, price

five star !

I would have given five stars for this restaurant but HappyCow would not let me as it is not a strictly veg restaurant .... :(
We ordered quite a bit of foods and every single dish was spectacular! The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the owner with her wife is passionate with what they create.

I normally don’t like eating oily and salty food as they make me feel bad after, but this place is different. They follow the science of food combination and use superior quality of ingredients.

Highly recommend this place!

Pros: delicious and healthy food, location, service

Amazing Everything!

Me and my girlfriend came here on our first night in Nagoya and were amazed at the kindness of the staff (consisting of only husband and wife) and the amazing food. We loved it so much we went back a second night also considering we were only there for 2 nights! If I could give this place 5 starts I would! It is clear that the chef adores cooking and holds the customers feedback with very high regard which is so rewarding from a customers perspective. Highly recommend! Best food and service we have had the whole time we have been in japan!
If we could we would probably just go back to Nagoya simply for this restaurant!

Pros: everything!

Worthy of 5 Stars

Plenty of vegan options here, which are clearly marked on the menu. Seems a fusion of hearty Chinese and Japanese cuisine. We had mabo tofu and vegan ramen. Both were the best vegan renditions of either dish I've had (and I had a lot of vegan ramen in Japan!). The waitress and chef were both super friendly and the chef even asked to take a photo with us. A gem in Nagoya.

Awesome!!

I'd give this place 5 stars if it was possible. Delicious food, amazing service, really good wine, healthy ingredients, good music... I had a great time, didn't want to leave! We tried as many things from the vegan choices as we could but I'd have to come a couple more times to try everything. Big recommendation, don't miss this place!

Pros: Many delicious vegan options, Big portions, Great service (speaks only Japanese), Location, Music, Atmosphere

Cons: Not many alcoholic drink options

Incredible vegan ramen with a vegan egg! Similar to T's Tan Tan but I think it was even better. The owners are lovely and one of them is vegan. We chatted to them for a while and had a great time. We got given some complimentary moon cakes before leaving. I wish I was in Nagoya longer so we could go back!!

Pros: Friendly engaging staff Incredible food Reasonable

Just fantastic

Would do 5 stars, but the max for nonveg is 4.

This place has more choices for vegans than some of the exclusively veg places in town. We had pickles, tofu salad with amazing sesame dressing, greens stir fried with yuba in a yummy sauce, and tantan ramen. There were 4 or 5 other things we could have ordered as main. We also got very nice cakes at the end. The quality of ingredients was really great.

Owners are very nice-- they chatted for a while and gave us good suggestions of vegan spots in other cities in Japan. When in Nagoya in the future, this is the first place we would go.

Best Vegan food I had in Japan

We ended up going here twice in our two nights in Nagoya as it was so good. We tried a big portion of the menu and everything we had was perfection. The vegan ramen which I believe is a lunch time special was by far the best. The owner is so friendly and made us feel very welcome. We will definitely be back next time we're in Japan. Would give it ten stars if I could.

Pros: Amazing food, Friendly staff
